What is an RSS feed?

RSS feeds are used to provide links to updated information on websites completely automatically. They are commonly used on news sites, where people want to have information as soon as possible. Modern web browsers, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 7, Firefox or Safari, often display the orange RSS logo next to the web address for websites that have an RSS feed. N.B. Items appear in a feed when they are added, and also whenever they are updated.

To use an RSS feed, you need software that can download the updates automatically. The latest email programs, including Microsoft Outlook 2007 and Thunderbird, support RSS feeds directly, and there are addins for older versions. For example, intraVnews for Outlook 2003 (which is free) works really well and puts the RSS items into a folder in your Outlook inbox. There are also browser add-ins, such as NewsFox (for the Firefox browser), free online readers such as NewsGator or Google Reader, and separate applications such as SharpReader.
