Monday 20th July 2015 at St Paul's Newtown

The Deanery Synod Papers page has links for all downloadable papers, as well as relevant links.

Highlights of the recent Deanery Synod meeting at St Paul’s Newtown included:

  • The appointment of an acting Lay Chair - John Taylor has stood down from responsibilities on Diocesan Synod, Bishop’s Council and Deanery Synod. The Area Dean paid tribute to John’s contribution and synod appointed Margaret Vaughan on an acting basis till the November synod, while a long-term replacement is found.
  • A General Synod report from Fran Wood and David Brooke - General Synod took place just a week ago and covered issues ranging from Climate Justice to legislation on faculties, distribution of communion and new baptism texts. A written report will be posted in due course. Elections to General Synod will take place in September.
  • A report on the outcome of Parish Share pledges - which resulted in an overall 4.47% increase from the parishes of the deanery. Bill Braviner congratulated all concerned, and thanked those who had led discussions.
  • An update on the Deanery Children’s Worker project - Bill Braviner described the impact Claire Pearce is having, and encouraged parishes to consider an additional donation to see the project through to December while we consider the long term future.
  • Further details on deanery planning guidelines from the diocese - David Brooke provided a variety of papers for synod members to read, and explained how hard questions raised by the Mission Strength/Financial Strength “blob charts” were to lie behind the process. The DSMPC will support parishes in making an initial submission and we will do our best to keep our creative thinking to the fore.

The meeting concluded with a farewell tribute and social with refreshments for the Revd Derek Rosamond, who retires as Priest in Charge of St Paul’s Newtown at the end of August, and will be moving to Thirsk.

The next meeting will be on 14th September 2015 (venue to be advised).
